Down Syndrome Training Day
The training will cover the specific learning profile of a pupil with Down Syndrome, how to pace a lesson to maximise student engagement, differentiation strategies across the curriculum (including English and maths), supporting behaviour, increasing self-esteem, supporting unstructured times of the day and promoting independence.
New to EYFS: Understanding Best Practice for Teaching and Learning (Day 1 of 2)
This is a 2-part course, providing an in-depth look at best practice in the EYFS including:
Understanding the statutory requirements of the EYFS curriculum
Creating an environment that really enables learning for children and adults
Developing manageable assessments, including the EYFS profile
Building an effective team
Participants will have the opportunity to explore current research and deepen their understanding of how they can provide the best early years experience for their children.

Services to Schools: Single Central Record
This unique, innovative and practical workshop considers issues around setting up and maintaining the data on the schools’ SCR in the context of the regulations, guidance and best practice.
Course objectives include:
To understand both the regulatory framework and best practice underpinning the format and content of the SCR
To consider the categories of staff/workers that should be recorded on the SCR
To explore options around format and content of the SCR
To equip participants with a practical understanding of all pre-employment checks for school-based staff, volunteers, contractors and agency workers
To help participants review their own school SCR and the related pre-employment checking processes
The SCR forms part of the regular Ofsted inspection.
Leading Positive Change in Schools - Equality, Diversity and Inclusion (Cohort 2 session 1 of 4)
We are delighted to offer a second cohort for this hugely successful and innovative workshop programme specifically developed for Greenwich school leaders. There will be 25 spaces, and each participant will need to commit to attend four workshops through the 24/25 academic year, with individual and collaborative work between workshops, although this will be limited.
The programme is being run by the consultancy, Equitura, who specialise in working with organisations, including the education sector, on issues pertaining to culture, diversity and social equity. If you participated in our training sessions on race equity, you will recall it being led by Laura Durrant who will be delivering these workshops with her colleague Maddy Durrant and in collaboration with Hemisphere Education (part of Rare Recruitment and specialists in training provision to schools on race equity).
Objective of programme: Participants will be part of a unique cohort working together to identify, understand, and challenge barriers to race equity. Through providing training and insights on race equity in an educational setting, leaders will be equipped to build a long term, impactful and resilient race equity action plan for their individual school.
Outcomes: All participants will leave with a robust race equity plan for their school and be part of the production of a guidance note for schools in Greenwich to amplify the reach of the programme.

Assessment Leader Network (KS1/2)
An opportunity for Assessment leaders at EYFS, KS1 and KS2 to be able to network with colleagues and share best practice across Royal Greenwich schools.

Autumn Term EAR Curriculum Hub
This hub is open to all schools in The Royal Borough of Greenwich and we welcome EYFS, primary and secondary colleagues.
We provide a safe, supportive space for schools to discuss how to aim for a racially equitable curriculum.
This meeting is particularly useful for colleagues with responsibility for the curriculum, or for those who would like the opportunity to network with other colleagues about developing a racially equitable curriculum.
We hope by working collaboratively in this way, we will most effectively support the students of Greenwich and ensure that we are delivering the best possible curriculum and enrichment opportunities for them.

Developing mathematical reasoning for teachers who are new to KS2
This course is for teachers new to KS2. It will explore strategies to develop reasoning and problem solving in mathematics in KS2. Teachers will strengthen subject knowledge through engaging in learning tasks to use back in the classroom and share experiences in the follow up session.
Apple Teacher (Cohort 2)
Apple Teacher is a free professional development programme from Apple that introduces the basics of using iPad, explores productivity with Pages, Keynote and Numbers and then creativity with iMovie and GarageBand.
Over the two half-days, this course will work through all six ‘badges’ of Apple Teacher, enabling the attendee to gain their Apple teacher recognition by the end of the second workshop.

Heads Partnership: Training event. Culture for Now: Curious Not Triggered
The training event for the Autumn and Summer Heads Partnership will be led by Katherine Powell.
Katherine is the Director and Founder of KP&A. As a coach, Katherine works with senior and aspiring leaders. She believes that everyone should lead ‘just as they are’ and uses her coaching skills to support leaders in achieving this.

We will think about ‘big culture’ and how leaders set and influence this by exploring: what we mean by ‘culture’; what we understand about ‘trust’ and how we become culture curators.

Building on the themes in the first workshop we will think about our personal leadership and the role it plays in creating culture.

“Under Section 2F of the Children Act 2004, I have statutory powers to collect data relating to children from any public sector organisation in England, meaning it is compulsory for all schools to provide the information requested. The survey can be accessed here, and more information is available here.
I have made it my mission since taking up the role three years ago to listen to children and give their voices and views a platform. Based on extensive engagements with children across the country, including two of the largest ever surveys of children – The Big Ask and The Big Ambition, I have set out a positive vision of what childhood should look like, where children feel their views are important and listened to by the adults who make decisions in their lives.
With a new government, this is now the moment to find out the state of the nation of support in schools. The survey asks about support offered to pupils and their families, staff roles and responsibilities, and the characteristics and vulnerabilities of pupils.
I will publish overall findings, not naming any individual schools, and will take them to the new Government, to inform future policy and help all those working with children to make schools supportive environments for everyone to learn and thrive.

KS2 Expected Standard writing moderation workshop for Year 6 teachers
This session will focus on particular criteria within the expected standard and provide an opportunity for participants to:
Strengthen their understanding of the KS2 writing national standards
Moderate a range of writing from their Year 6 pupils with other schools
Delegates will be required to bring along a selection of Year 6 writing evidence from their school to moderate with other schools against the expected standard statements.
The second moderation workshop session, in March, will focus on the criteria within the greater depth standard.

Role of the Safeguarding Governor and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024
This is a virtual course.
This course will investigate the specific and important role of the Safeguarding Governor, to ensure the:
legal requirements are in place and are known and understood by all staff and adults working in your school
expectations of OfSTED are being met and that governors can provide evidence of their compliance
expectations from Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance are fully understood and embedded

A networking session for SENCOs to share new developments in SEND. This session will provide support, information, advice and sign posting for SENCOs in mainstream schools in Royal Borough of Greenwich.
First Aid Paediatric Course (2 days)
This is a 2-day course. Participants need to attend both days.
Day 1 - Thursday 23rd January
Day 2 - Friday 24th January
This course will provide participants with training as Paediatric First Aiders within the workplace, incorporating particular skills for the treatment of injured and ill children and babies.
Day 1 will cover working with children aged 8 and above
Day 2 will cover working with babies from birth to 1 and children 1-7 years.
All participants will receive a delegate pack. It should be noted that there is no examination on the second day, participants will be continually assessed during the course. Attendance is required on both dates.
Successful candidates will be awarded an Emergency First Aid (Children and Babies) certificate, valid for three years.

ASD and Girls
This course provides an overview of autism in relation to girls. It looks at the diagnostic methods and explores why ASD has often been thought of as a more 'male' condition.
We look at recent developments in our understanding of how autism presents in girls, addressing special interests, behaviour, social skills, masking/camouflaging and mental health.
Examining how common autism is in girls, why it often goes undiagnosed until later in life, and why other diagnoses may be given instead. We will also explore those areas where autism can pose challenges for girls and the adults around them, and discuss strategies and techniques to support.

Safer Recruitment
This workshop is the Safer Recruitment Consortium accredited, updated version of the Safer Recruitment training for Headteachers, school Governors and other staff who are likely to sit on interview panels or appoint staff.
It is still a requirement for every school appointments panel to include at least one member who has completed the Safer Recruitment training.
Course content provides clear explanations of government guidance regarding the safer recruitment process. It also includes an update of the most recent legislation changes (Keeping Children Safe in Education) and the pre-employment checking process that impacts on Safeguarding and Child Protection.
It is recommended that you refresh your training every 5 years.

Primary English Subject Leaders (KS1/2)
We would like to invite English subject leaders to attend a series of network meetings that will take place over the course of the year.
Designated Safeguarding Lead Person Refresher Course
Keeping Children Safe in Education and Government guidance requires Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL) to complete refresher training every two years.
This course will revisit the roles and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), new safeguarding guidance, initiatives, reflections and challenges of the role. It will provide participants with the opportunity to share safeguarding experiences with their DSL colleagues.
The course will also provide updates on safeguarding legislation and guidance - the current Keeping Children Safe in Education, and Working Together to Safeguard Children, that affect Safeguarding and Child Protection.

Managing Challenging Conversations and Conflict
From time to time all staff will be faced by a difficult and demanding parent. From challenging safeguarding decisions, academic results, to accusations of bullying, some parents can be very intimidating or even aggressive.
This course is suitable for anyone (including support and admin staff) from primary, secondary and special schools as well as FE colleges, and will examine effective ways of handling such situations. This course is suitable for all staff who come into face to face or telephone contact with parents.
Handling violence and aggression in the workplace is easier when you know what to do. Our course will provide you with the knowledge and skills to deal with these situations.

Designated Safeguarding Lead Person Training (Full)
This one-day course will cover the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), help participants understand safeguarding thresholds to help make the right decisions about what steps to take when concerns about a child have been raised. How to recognise, respond to, refer and record concerns about a child.
The course will assist you to understand statutory safeguarding legislation and guidance that forms your organisation’s processes and procedures to safeguard and protect children. This will include the current Keeping Children Safe in Education - Working Together to Safeguard Children, and The role of the DSL at a Child Protection Case Conference.
'Word Up' Approach
The Word Up approach is suitable for children working significantly below the Key Stage standards and not responding successfully to the traditional 'synthetic phonics' methods. This is a whole word reading and language development approach, particularly suitable for children who are visual learners.

Primary Computing Subject Leaders (KS1/2)
We would like to invite primary Computing Subject Leaders to attend a series of 3 network meetings that will take place over the course of the academic year. The meetings will be a fantastic opportunity to meet colleagues from different schools, share good practice and discuss current research and initiatives.
The sessions will be run by Tim Lings, the Director of Digital Learning at Heronsgate Primary, as part of the work with RBG EYFS/Primary Strategy Group. Tim has a wealth of experience teaching and leading computing and has been recognised for the work he has done with digital learning at Heronsgate. He is passionate about working with Computing leads across Greenwich.

This course provides an overview of the story box programmes, which offer a story-based multisensory approach to the development of early reading and communication skills. Some boxes also include a focus on early maths concepts and skills. The boxes contain a large range of engaging resources.

First Aid Paediatric Course (2 days)
This is a 2-day course. Participants need to attend both days.
Day 1 - Thursday 13th March
Day 2 - Friday 14th March
This course will provide participants with training as Paediatric First Aiders within the workplace, incorporating particular skills for the treatment of injured and ill children and babies.
Day 1 will cover working with children aged 8 and above
Day 2 will cover working with babies from birth to 1 and children 1-7 years.
All participants will receive a delegate pack. It should be noted that there is no examination on the second day, participants will be continually assessed during the course. Attendance is required on both dates.
Successful candidates will be awarded an Emergency First Aid (Children and Babies) certificate, valid for three years.

This course is aimed at individuals that organise school trips. It provides a practical overview of what needs to be considered when planning and delivering school trips, both in the UK and abroad.
The training course covers aspects of the law relating to educational visits, risk assessments of visits and administrative requirements associated with off-site activities.
As part of their obligations, schools must have an Educational Visits Co-ordinator (EVC) in post and ensure that they have been suitably trained.

This course will provide staff with ways to analyse behaviour in children with an ASD, taking into account their specific learning and processing styles. Designated Safeguarding Lead Person Training (Full)
This one-day course will cover the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), help participants understand safeguarding thresholds to help make the right decisions about what steps to take when concerns about a child have been raised. How to recognise, respond to, refer and record concerns about a child.
The course will assist you to understand statutory safeguarding legislation and guidance that forms your organisation’s processes and procedures to safeguard and protect children. This will include the current Keeping Children Safe in Education - Working Together to Safeguard Children, and The role of the DSL at a Child Protection Case Conference.
'Word Up' Approach
The Word Up approach is suitable for children working significantly below the Key Stage standards and not responding successfully to the traditional 'synthetic phonics' methods. This is a whole word reading and language development approach, particularly suitable for children who are visual learners.

Supporting struggling readers across all year groups
This course identifies and provides strategies for teaching the crucial concepts that children need to learn in the early stages of reading, from directionality through to working on unknown words in context.
It identifies the three main sources of information that good readers use to read: Meaning, Language Structure and Phonics, and provides training on how to support these three areas in simple, practical ways.
Participants will be taught how to take a Running Record. This is a simple assessment that can be taken on any text. They are a quick and efficient way of gathering information about a child’s reading and are particularly useful for children who struggle with reading, providing valuable information about the strategies a child uses/ignores. Once gaps have been identified they can be addressed in order to support the child’s reading development.

ASD and Girls
This course provides an overview of autism in relation to girls. It looks at the diagnostic methods and explores why ASD has often been thought of as a more 'male' condition.
We look at recent developments in our understanding of how autism presents in girls, addressing special interests, behaviour, social skills, masking/camouflaging and mental health.
Examining how common autism is in girls, why it often goes undiagnosed until later in life, and why other diagnoses may be given instead. We will also explore those areas where autism can pose challenges for girls and the adults around them, and discuss strategies and techniques to support.

We look at recent developments in our understanding of how autism presents in girls, addressing special interests, behaviour, social skills, masking/camouflaging and mental health.
Examining how common autism is in girls, why it often goes undiagnosed until later in life, and why other diagnoses may be given instead. We will also explore those areas where autism can pose challenges for girls and the adults around them, and discuss strategies and techniques to support.

Apple Teacher (Cohort 1)
Apple Teacher is a free professional development programme from Apple that introduces the basics of using iPad, explores productivity with Pages, Keynote and Numbers and then creativity with iMovie and GarageBand.
Over the two half-days, this course will work through all six ‘badges’ of Apple Teacher, enabling the attendee to gain their Apple teacher recognition by the end of the second workshop.

RBG Inclusion Conference
Developing an inclusive culture in schools is a key protective factor to support our children and their families. With the additional vulnerabilities of some of our children, the response from all adults in a school setting can be life changing. We have developed a visual about what inclusion means in our borough and the resources and tools available to our schools.

As a LA we are committed to supporting our schools and have devised a day to learn and reflect on a number of themes that are impacting the experience of children in their schools, at home and in their communities.
The theme for our Inclusion conference is ‘Where are you on your inclusion journey?’ The event has a number of speakers and there will be the opportunity to participate in some workshops to develop our practice further.
We encourage every school to attend the day and to send up to two representatives from each school. This event is free of charge and is an exciting professional development opportunity for individuals but also for whole school practice. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Understanding the governors role in Headteacher pay
This course will be held online.
This course will provide participants with an in-depth understanding of the statutory requirements for Headteacher Performance Management and will include:
Overview of statutory guidance
Organisational details of the Headteacher Performance Management process, including the role of the external advisor and the requirements for target reviews

Application Deadline: Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) Preparation for Assessment
Description
This course provides participants with the six 2 hour sessions (previously 3 days) for preparation for assessment and the fee also covers the half-day assessment required for gaining HLTA status. The deadline for applications is 18th October)
These six sessions will take you through all aspects which you need to cover in preparation for assessment against the 33 HLTA standards.
Session 1 (7th November 1-3:30pm): Introduction, overview of assessment methods
Session 2 (8th November 1-3:30pm): Overview of task forms, standards and examples
Session 3 (14th November 1-3:30pm): How to record evidence of teaching, standards and examples
Session 4 (15th November 1-3:30pm): How to select and record supplementary document evidence
Session 5 (12th December 1-3:30pm): Draft task reviews, assessment grid referencing and short task completion
Session 6: (13th December 1-3:30pm): Short task completion and how to prepare for school assessment meetings
All sessions including the tutorial are compulsory and candidates who miss one will need to reschedule for the next available dates. This will affect their hand in and assessment dates.
The final assessment will be by telephone or online meeting.
All candidates must check they have the relevant level 2 (equivalent to GCSE A*-C, 9-4, grade) maths and English qualification certificates before applying.

Role of the Safeguarding Governor and Keeping Children Safe in Education 2024
This is a virtual course.
This course will investigate the specific and important role of the Safeguarding Governor, to ensure the:
legal requirements are in place and are known and understood by all staff and adults working in your school
expectations of OfSTED are being met and that governors can provide evidence of their compliance
expectations from Keeping Children Safe in Education guidance are fully understood and embedded
This is a certified course to support Governors evidence of KCSIE compliance.

Greenwich Primary School Cross Country Race

Following the success of last year's cross country race, which gave hundreds of children the opportunity to represent their school at running, Cambridge Harriers will be hosting the Greenwich Primary School Cross Country Race on Wednesday 16th October in Avery Hill Park, SE9 2PQ.
The meet time will be 1pm with the first race will start at 1:30pm sharp. We are planning that the races will finish by 2:30pm.
Schools are invited to send teams of up to six pupils in each category.

6 x Year 6 Boys
6 x Year 6 Girls

Costs:

Health and Safety
Race Director will coduct a risk assessment prior to the event in order to identify and manage any hazards. First aiders are booked to attend.
Results and Awards
Finishing places of first three pupils in each school team added up with lowest scoring team winning.
Trophy to winning team in each category plus medals to first three in each category.
Course
Races to be run over a course of approximately 1500m around Avery Hill Park. Course to be taped and marshalled so no one gets lost. Course to start and finish behind Café in centre of park with adjacent changing rooms open for use of toilets.
At end of finish, runners will be funnelled to be given a raffle ticket indicating their finishing position.
Staffing:
Race director; Course Director; course and finish marshals; paperwork and results team to be provided by Cambridge Harriers.
The games will be run under the principles of the London Youth Games Code of Conduct and all teams must bring with them a qualified first aider.

Primary Computing Subject Leaders (KS1/2)
We would like to invite primary Computing Subject Leaders to attend a series of 3 network meetings that will take place over the course of the academic year. The meetings will be a fantastic opportunity to meet colleagues from different schools, share good practice and discuss current research and initiatives.
The sessions will be run by Tim Lings, the Director of Digital Learning at Heronsgate Primary, as part of the work with RBG EYFS/Primary Strategy Group. Tim has a wealth of experience teaching and leading computing and has been recognised for the work he has done with digital learning at Heronsgate. Setting up a Sensory Programme for Pupils with an ASD in your School: To include sensory circuits and diets (Full Day)
This course supports staff in schools in supporting pupils with an ASD and sensory sensitivities, setting up interventions and supporting specialist Occupational Therapist programmes.
Designated Safeguarding Leader refresher training course
Keeping Children Safe in Education and Government guidance requires Designated Safeguarding Leads (DSL) to complete refresher training every two years.
This course will revisit the roles and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), new safeguarding guidance, initiatives, reflections and challenges of the role. It will provide participants with the opportunity to share safeguarding experiences with their DSL colleagues.
The course will also provide updates on safeguarding legislation and guidance - the current Keeping Children Safe in Education, and Working Together to Safeguard Children, that affect Safeguarding and Child Protection.

Developing trauma aware and responsive practice in your setting (EYFS) Day 1 of 2
Transition from Nursery to Primary can be a challenging time for children, their families and schools.
Considering the varying needs of children, this training is focused at looking at how early childhood experiences can impact on development particularly those who have experienced reoccurring trauma.
This 2-part course will look at thinking behind how trauma, attachment and adverse experiences can impact on a child’s development. There will be opportunities to explore the needs of children you support in your setting and explore different approaches to engage and support challenging presentations.

Designated Safeguarding Lead Person Training (Full)
This one-day course will cover the role and responsibilities of the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL), help participants understand safeguarding thresholds to help make the right decisions about what steps to take when concerns about a child have been raised. How to recognise, respond to, refer and record concerns about a child.
The course will assist you to understand statutory safeguarding legislation and guidance that forms your organisation’s processes and procedures to safeguard and protect children. This will include the current Keeping Children Safe in Education - Working Together to Safeguard Children, and The role of the DSL at a Child Protection Case Conference.
Primary English Subject Leaders (KS1/2)

Supporting Children who Struggle to Learn to Read
This course identifies and provides strategies for teaching the crucial concepts that children need to learn in the early stages of reading, from directionality through to working on unknown words in context.
It identifies the three main sources of information that good readers use to read: Meaning, Language Structure and Phonics, and provides training on how to support these three areas in simple, practical ways.
Participants will be taught how to take a Running Record. This is a simple assessment that can be taken on any text. They are a quick and efficient way of gathering information about a child’s reading and are particularly useful for children who struggle with reading, providing valuable information about the strategies a child uses/ignores. Once gaps have been identified they can be addressed in order to support the child’s reading development.
Apprentice Information session for school leaders
This virtual session will give school leaders an overview of the teaching apprenticeship programme, offered by GLP, starting in September 2025.
It will be useful for school leaders to help shape recruitment strategies for the next academic year.

'Word Up' Approach
The Word Up approach is suitable for children working significantly below the Key Stage standards and not responding successfully to the traditional 'synthetic phonics' methods. This is a whole word reading and language development approach, particularly suitable for children who are visual learners.

Getting It Right First Time - Training on Exclusion Law and Guidance
Training on Exclusion Law and Guidance
Practitioners will:
Have an understanding of the exclusion guidance and responsibilities when suspending and issuing permanent exclusions
Be empowered to issue exclusions when necessary, in a reasonable, lawful and procedurally fair manner
Have a full understanding of Independent Review Panels.
Settings will:
Have staff who have a greater understanding of best practice and are compliant with the responsibilities of the Exclusion Guidance as issued by the DfE.
Phonics Programme 'STEPS to Success' (Session 2 of 2)
This 2-day course will enable all practitioners to deliver a structured, multisensory and cumulative phonics literacy programme.
Training will include:
Reading and spelling theory
Principles of effective teaching within the programme
Reassessment process.
Course attendees will be sent a link via email before the training, giving them access to a 30 minute video which they should watch before attending the course. If you are booking this course for someone else, please forward the link to them when you receive. It is important that the video is watched before attending the course.
STEPS will observe the staff member teaching the programme if requested by the school.
